Is the 30-378 wby mag a good choice for ultra long range bench rest?

I am considering getting one custom made with a long heavy barrel >30” and a custom stock. Also could someone include some ballistics out to 1000 yards. Thankyou

while that gun can definitely reach 1000 yards, in general these super-magnums aren’t the most accurate rounds out there. It seems they put a little more emphasis on speed than accuracy, which is fine, as it is a hunting round.

besides, that thing is going to recoil like a M.F. off the bench, you won’t be able to shoot enough to get good at it, as even if you can withstand the recoil, you’ll be phyiscally worn out after 20 shots.

Further, ‘mega 30s’ like this one are really designed for being able to deliver a ton of energy to a game animal 500 yards down range. That is irrelevant for benchresters. For benchrest shooting you want something mild and accurate, it need not be fast, you simply adjust for the specific known distance you are shooting.

More information to contradict other answers

the 300-378 is a flat shooting rifle. However, for benchresting, that is irrelevant. A flat shooting rifle is great for hunting because you can shoot ‘straight on’ with no hold-over much further out. Game animals don’t stop at one specific range, it is somethign you need to guess at.

Benchresting is different, the distances are known, and you will be dialing in your scope for every distance. Hence, FLATTER trajectory means absolutely nothing. Knowing the exact drop of your bullet, so you can click in that amount is what matters. at 500 yards 17 inchs or 32 inchs is the same thing, you convert that to MOA and click it in.

Hello, at 600 yards, an elk is still a big target. Note I don’t think hunters should be shooting at that range, but that isn’t at all the type of accuracy benchresters are going for. Being able to hit a game animal is an entirely different task, one that for the most part is related to the skill of the shooter, not the cartridge being used.

Benchresting is different, you want to get 1/4 MOA groupings against a paper target, so you don’t care how much power it has. Remember, 1/4 moa groups are going to be 2 inches at 800 yards, let me assure you, elk are bigger than 2 inches. Heck, even the vitals zone is about 8 inches across, so at 800 yards, simply acheiving 1 MOA is sufficent to get the job done.

Benchresting is different. To get that kind of accuracy, you need to be extremely steady, hence shooting off the bench. A 300-378 weatherby might be a fine long range hunting gun, but it is NOT a good chambering for a long range benchrest gun
