Arthur Lyman – Yellow Bird $11.98 Personnel includes: Arthur Lyman, John Kramer, Alan Soares, Harold Chang.Producer: Richard Vaughn.Reissue producer: Anton Glovsky.Personnel: Arthur Lyman (vibraphone).Arthur Lyman`s enchanted vibraphone conjures exotic magic on this HiFi reissue. Yellow Bird leans more on the cornucopia of actual birdcalls that became Lyman`s musical signature later on. Lyman delivers intoxicatingly rich music in the dense interplay of guiro (South American scraped gourd), maracas, and tambourine with the vibes in "Bamboo Taboo." Lyman`s use of four-mallet vibes (a pair in each hand) and added instrumentation of guitar, ukulele, flute, glockenspiel, and others results in a mix that is unhindered by much mid- and low-range instrumentation. Thus soaring, Lyman provides aerial views of mysterious and beautiful oceanic utopias and dresses up such varied standards as "Havah Nagilah" and the American folk work song "John Henry" to percussive effect. Also here, Lyman switches to the wooden, vibrato-less marimba and adds bass and piano for an unusually deep dive in plumbing the depths of "Arrive Derci Roma." ~ Tom Schulte Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Ideal $29.48 Although born and raised in the city, Blaine Thompson holds a deep regard for his rural ties and considers both Tennessee and Mississippi to collectively be home. He was heavily influenced by British poetry and British literature at an early age. These influences have also been paralleled by Thompson?s having a sincere interest in the craft of storytelling in general. With the frequent inclusion of the heroic motif, as well as the periodic treatment of mythology and allegory, you have the representation of one particular aspect of Thompson?s writing. To a high degree, he has also been influenced by screenwriting as evaluated from the standpoint of cinematic history. Additionally, because of his having become an informal student over the discussion regarding science, skeptical evaluation, and human belief, many factors come into play in that Thompson sometimes writes poems from a singular frame of reference, while at other times, he writes a poem which incorporates some, if not all, of the aforementioned topics into a single work. The end result is an attempted poetic style that conveys stories that are highly romanticized in their telling. |

Mansfield, Marty Wekser.Recorded at the Henry J. Kaiser Aluminum Dome, Hawaii between 1958 & 1965. Includes liner notes by Larry Zwisohn. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Adapter: Sebastian de Yradier.Liner Note Author: Larry Zwisohn.Recording information: The Henry J. Kaiser Aluminum Dome.Arranger: Sebastian de Yradier.Exotica fans might be outraged by such an assertion, but really to most listeners one Arthur Lyman album is about the same as another. And if you only get one Arthur Lyman album, you might as well get one with the hits (all three of them, two of which didn`t reach the Top 40) and one that has a bit of a chronological span, right? The Very Best of Arthur Lyman fills that bill, including of course his sole big hit, "Yellow Bird," as well as "Love for Sale" and "Taboo," which both made around the middle of the Top 100. In all there are 18 tracks from his 1958-1965 HiFi albums, with his sleepy, vibes-suffused covers of a number of standards, among them "Havah Nagila," "Caravan," "Misirlou," Ravel`s "Bolero," and the less expected "Blue Hawaii." There`s also his own rendition of "Quiet Village" (birdcalls included), the song that was taken to the Top Five by his former boss, Martin Denny. Even with tracks that have been consciously selected as a best-of, in all it`s an agreeable but rather similar-sounding set that establishes an unrelentingly drowsy mood. Things do perk up a bit occasionally, as on "Love for Sale," an easy listening instrumental you could actually dance to. ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. The Legend of Pele: Sounds of Arthur Lyman $11.98 Arthur Lyman’s enchanted vibraphone conjures exotic magic on this Rykodisc reissue. The Legend of Pele is a series of material loosely based on the elusive and transforming Hawaiian volcano goddess, creating soundscapes of land and fauna in awe of a powerful and unpredictable force. Lyman’s vibe-powered lounge music is subtle as a tropical mist on “Cumana.” Lyman’s use of four-mallet vibes (a pair in each hand) and added instrumentation of guitar, ukulele, flute, and glockenspiel result in a mix that is unhindered by much mid- and low-range instrumentation. Thus soaring, Lyman provides aerial views of mysterious and beautiful oceanic utopias and dresses up such varied standards as “76 Trombones” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scherezade.” ~ Tom Schulte, All Music Guide |

Lyman 66/Shadow of Your Smile $16.98 These mid-’60s discs present a pair of well-rounded and diverse long-players. The contents of Lyman 66 (1965) and Shadow of Your Smile (1966) are typical for the artist and era, mixing modern pop and folk numbers with songs from the stage and screen. Staying true to his environs, Arthur Lyman and his assembled combo would reach back to their roots in tiki traditionals and exotica. The material was recorded in an acoustically engineered Geodesic Aluminum Dome at the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s venerable Shell Bar and even by modern standards, the uncanny ambience remains evident. Lyman 66’s key inclusions are the fun and frolic of the opening update of “Lemon Tree.” The intimate and romantic title song from “Dear Heart” provides tropically flavored ukuleles and Lyman’s soft vibraphone touch. It joins the sublime “Kon Tiki” a pair of the album’s premiere ballads. Other better-than-average-to-excellent cuts are the “Medley from Mary Poppins” boasting a toe-tappin’ “Spoonful of Sugar,” a jazzy and introspective “Chim Chim Cheree,” as well as a whirling “Supercalifragalistic” conclusion. “(Jungle) Cat” is not to be missed by fans of space age bachelor pad kitsch. Considerably more in tune with his Polynesian audience and environs is the “Boy from Laupahoehoe” — a Hawaiian folk song written by Irmgard F. Aluli. The format of Shadow of Your Smile is quite similar to its chronological predecessor. “I’ll Remember You” is a regional favorite and this less than impassioned rendition is certainly in no danger of replacing Elvis Presley’s unforgettable Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite (1973) version. Additional offerings inspired by the locals are the full-blown exotica of “Marobi,” the collegiate team fight-song “Imua Kamehameha,” the sumptuous “Kamalani o Keaukaha,” and last but far from least is the ultra-hip “E Lei Ka Lei Lei (The Beach Party Song).” Its interminably catchy melody makes it an unqualified standout. In terms of Lyman and company’s interpretation of concurrent chart hits, there is a lovely reading of the Beatles’ “Yesterday,” while the even-tempo treatment given to “Shadow of Your Smile” and concluding the package is undeniably the most energetic selection on either outing: a definitely youth-oriented and vibrant take of “Hang on Sloopy.” Parties interested in sampling the best of what Lyman was doing in the center of the ’60s are encouraged to check out this installment in Collectors’ Choice Music’s thorough digital reassessment of the artist’s Hi-Fi Records library. ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi |

Arthur Lyman – Bwana A/Bahia $16.81 Personnel: Arthur Lyman (guitar, vibraphone, marimba); David Kupele (guitar); Chew Hoon Chang (bamboo flute); Allen Soares (piano); John Kramer (upright bass).Reaffirming its status as the 21st century`s most eclectic reissue label, Collectors` Choice Music begins an extensive assessment of vintage exotica pop master Arthur Lyman with this two-fer, corralling both the Bwana A (1958) and Bahia (1959) long-players. Lyman was not only a Hawaii-based bandleader but a multi-instrumentalist as well. After serving an apprenticeship under the tutelage of Martin Denny, Lyman — and longtime bandmate John Kramer (bass/flute) — would eventually settle into a career-defining gig as the main attraction at the Henry J. Kaiser-conceived and constructed Hawaiian Village complex. Lyman often recorded in an aluminum geodesic dome — built by American industrialist, ship magnate, and music lover Kaiser. The structure`s innate three-second delay would imbue the music documented there with an almost enveloping soundscape. So taken was Lyman with the facility that he dedicates Bwana A — which translates as "boss man/friend" — to Kaiser himself. Each composition and performance provides a unique mood, subtle though it may seem. The distinct Asian feel to the enigmatic "South Pacific Moonlight" and "Moon Over a Ruined Castle" are juxtaposed by the classically inspired update of Franz Schubert`s Serenade on "Waikiki Serenade." "Canton Rose" is both an outlet for one of Kramer`s far too infrequent bamboo flute solos as well as guest Chew Hoon Chang`s moon harp. "Vera Cruz" takes listeners to the heart of the jungle, where the ambience is replete with the very definition of exotica — including bird calls and the like. These augmentations resurface on the title track to Bahia. This cut reveals a perfect example of Lyman (vibes, marimba, guitar) and Alan Soares` (piano) repartee that turns up on the cover of the Les Baxter-penned "Jungle Jalopy." A further attempt at bringing the sounds of the Tropics to Middle America is the twangy traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar replicated on "Legend of the Rain" as well as the almost surreal "Beyond the Reef" — the latter of which begins with the ethereal vibrations of a conch shell. Bahia also features the fun and (believe it or not) funky "Caribbean Nights." "Quiet Village" and "Happy Voodoo" are two other adeptly chosen and imaginatively executed Les Baxter titles that are considerably more "native" than the hustle and bustle of the jazz-infused "Busy Port." Interestingly, each of the original LPs wraps up with entries that are quite unlike anything else on the respective platters. Bahia concludes with "Maui Chimes" as a bevy of ukuleles plays against melodic tubular bells, while "Colonel Bogey`s March" is a twist on the familiar theme to the film The Bridge on the Ri |

Taboo: The Greatest Hits of Arthur Lyman $14.98 Along with Martin Denny, whose band he played in before going it solo, Arthur Lyman was one of the greats of exotica. It could also be argued that he was a little more consistent than his former boss too. Taboo: The Greatest Hits of Arthur Lyman does a good job of proving just that. At his peak Lyman was recording four albums a year, leaving the compilers a wealth of material to choose for this set. The title cut was Lyman’s springboard to cocktail fame, his biggest hit and still standing out as his strongest outing, but the man was so consistent that it’s hard to fault any tune that he laid his vibe mallets to, no matter how hoary. “Quiet Village,” “Maui Chimes,” “Jungle Drums,” and “Hawaiian War Chant” are some of the sure winners that match the classic birdcall and percussion overload instrumentation of Lyman’s band with equally exotic themes. Popular hits of the ’60s get their due also with the surf chestnut “Miserlou” and Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue.” Where this set pushes the limits and proves that Lyman had none (it’s up to listeners to decide if those were limits of taste or ambition — or both) is with standards. Jazz standards like Ellington’s “Caravan” and Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” and unlikely traditional pieces like “Havah Nagilah” all get the exotica overhaul, and the arrangements work quite well, no matter what the source. ~ Wade Kergan, All Music GuidePerformers: Arthur Lyman – Bongos, Conch Shell, Conga, Guitar, Marimba, Percussion; Harold Chang – Drums, Percussion; John Kramer – Bass, Clarinet, Flute, Guitar, Percussion, Ukulele |

One reason for this is the group`s unusual harmonic sophistication. Jazzy keyboards, Stevie Wonder-ish melodic turns, and a sophisticated, highly textured approach to arrangement serve to immediately distinguish Ideal from the teeming R&B masses. Naturally, another key to the group`s sound is its vocals. PZ, J-Dante, Maverick, and Swab are equally adept at complex, Take 6-style harmonies, R. Kelly-esque love-man rhapsody/melisma, and a particularly unique, hip-hop-informed phrasing style that complements their jazzier harmonies with its off-the-beat rhythms. As with any self-respecting R&B outfit, the predominant song subject is amour, but Ideal brings enough fresh sounds to the table to keep those potentially time-worn topics from sounding stale. On Broadway/The Colorful Percussions of Arthur Lyman $16.98 This two-fer CD — which is part of Collectors’ Choice Music’s overhaul of Arthur Lyman’s HiFi Records catalog — contains both the On Broadway (1959) and Colorful Percussions of Arthur Lyman (1962) long-players. The former boasts four extended medleys that offer a nod to the Great White Way. The latter is a comparatively typical gathering of the type of tiki-inspired exotica that Lyman and company had become renowned for. Speaking of, Lyman (vibes/marimba/guitar) can be heard along with his usual support crew of Alan Soares (piano/celeste), John Kramer (bass/bamboo flute), and Harold Chang (percussion). Using memorable Broadway melodies, On Broadway presents multi-song suites culled from The King and I, My Fair Lady, Porgy and Bess, and South Pacific. The whole endeavor is thoroughly enjoyably and standouts include classy interpretations of “Getting to Know You,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Summertime,” and the instinctively catchy “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.” The Colorful Percussions of Arthur Lyman is a fairly generic name for a collection as it could apply to practically any one of his albums. Continuing with show tunes, the silver screen epic “Exodus” is given a suitably regal rendering. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the nugget “I Talk to the Trees” — lifted from Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner’s Paint Your Wagon. The traditional “Carabunta,”"Geisha Waltz,” and “Tangi Tika” are pure tropical magic. While tethering Lyman and group back to the mainland are their fairly straightforward version of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers’ righteously be-bop informed “Moanin’” and the Academy Award Winning title song from the movie Never on Sunday (1960). ~ Lindsay Planer, RoviPerformers: Harold Chang – Bongos; John Kramer – Bass (Upright), Flute; Arthur Lyman – Vibraphone |

Arthur Lyman – Taboo 2: New Exotic Sounds Of Arthur Lyman $11.98 Producer: Richard Vaughn.Reissue producer: Anton Glovsky.Audio Mixer: Danny Caccavo. This stands up to any Martin Denny album as an example of exotica in full flight, decorated with lots of bird noises and soft vibraphone. The songs do tend to melt into each other without much in the way of striking differences, and it`s not likely it would be played often except by those who can`t get enough Arthur Lyman in the house. "Jungle Fantasy," though, is notable as an example of exotica at its most frenetic, with exuberant birdcalls from the band and a fast tempo that has more in common with rhumbas than Hawaiian music. The CD reissue restores the original sleeve, whose distorted tikified heads were considered "too gruesome" upon its initial release. ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Many Moods of Arthur Lyman/Love for Sale $16.98 This Collectors’ Choice Music two-fer CD pairs bandleader Arthur Lyman’s The Many Moods of Arthur Lyman (1962) with his best-selling Love for Sale (1963). On both efforts, Lyman (vibraphone/marimba) is accompanied by John Kramer (bass/flute/guitar), Alan Soares (keyboards), and Harold Chang (percussion). As was typical operating procedure for the combo’s long-players at the time, each included a dozen tracks drawn from a variety of sources, including Great American Songbook standards, Broadway and Hollywood scores, and folk songs from around the world. While on the subject of globe-trotting, the laid-back opener “Sicilian Holiday” offers a textbook example of how Lyman and company fuse their seemingly disparate influences into their own unique brand of tasty tiki-inspired instrumentals. “Jungle Flower” — featuring some hypnotic and shimmering somnolent runs by Soares and Lyman — is the first of several melodies derived from Les Baxter compositions. Here, they utilize Baxter’s “Ritual of the Savage.” It directly contrasts the highly recommended and arguably over the top simulated bird calls and thoroughly jungle-fied Love for Sale entry “Love Dance.” Otherwise, the tracks are fairly straightforward examples of Lyman’s genre-defining exotica. Among the additional cinematic standouts are the upbeat and buoyant title song from the 1951 film Anna and the vibrant El Cid (1961) main theme, containing evidence of Chang’s percussive cohesion. “America” — courtesy of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story (1961) — bursts with fascinating textures thanks to the jazzy arrangement. Turning to the combo’s undeniably romantic side is the traditional, North American folk classic “Danny Boy” and “I Wish You Love.” Finally, demonstrating a too-often hidden penchant for post-bop jazz are the tracks “Love for Sale” and a groove-filled interpretation of “Sentimental Journey.” ~ Lindsay Planer, RoviPerformers: John Soares – Celeste, Piano; John Cramer – Bass (Upright), Flute, Guitar; Arthur Lyman – Vibraphone; Harold Chang – Percussion; John Kramer – Bass, Flute, Guitar |

Lyman Alpha Emitting Galaxies at High Redshift $31.98 As late as 1995, the anticipated widespread population of primeval galaxies remained at large, lurking undetected at unknown redshifts, with undiscovered properties. We present results from our efforts to detect and characterize primeval galaxies by their signature high-redshift Lyman-alpha emission lines utilizing two observational techniques: serendipitous slit spectroscopy and narrowband imaging. By pushing these techniques to their utmost limits, we probe the Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxy population out to redshifts as high as z = 6.5. Galaxies at this epoch reside in a universe which is just 800 million years old, a mere 6% of its current age. As such, this work provides one account of the manner by which observational cosmology has recently shifted from merely marveling at the incredible lookback times implied by the first few high-redshift detections, to the routine assembly of high-redshift datasets designed to address specific astrophysical issues. |

Sir Robert Chiltern (Jeremy Northam), a brilliant politician and a perfect gentleman, is the ideal husband for the charming Lady Chiltern (Cate Blanchett). They have a widely envied marriage until charming Mrs. Cheveley (Julianne Moore) appears with the intention of revealing a dark secret from Chiltern’s past. When his world seems to be falling apart, Chiltern turns to his lifelong friend Lord Arthur Goring (Rupert Everett), the most eligible bachelor in town. Ideal of Rationality $4.48 The Ideal of Rationality presents an evaluation of all the main varieties of rationalism, in clear and jargon-free language. Different notions of rationality – such as means-end, conception, hedonism, and the evil-avoidance view – are examined and rejected, in favor of the theory that to act rationally is to ‘act for the best’, a theory Nathanson characterizes as "critical pluralism." Among present-day thinkers whose ideas are scrutinized are Richard Brandt, Bernard Gert, Gilbert Harman, John Kekes, Robert Nozick, Karl Popper, and John Rawls. |

The Ideal Horse $17.48 Any horseman would agree with Burt Phillips that the ideal horse is obedient, responsive, well balanced, and pleasant to ride. In The Ideal Horse, he describes a step-by-step training program directed at producing such a mount. Basing his methods on an intimate knowledge of equine anatomy and psychology, Mr. Phillips explains that "we are always training a horse, for better or worse, when we are working with him," since horses learn by direct association of ideas. From the initial work in hand through lungeing, driving, and the various stages of mounted training, precise photographs and in-depth drawings enhance the text, making this book a valuable guide to riders and trainers alike. Years of practical experience and personal observations balance uniquely with a deep appreciation of the classical principles of riding and of the world’s great teachers. Readers may compare the terminology to that of Waldemar Seunig, as exemplified by such phrases as "unconstrained" to denote a lack of mental and physical tenseness; "gallop departs" in place of "canter" to avoid the careless use of the term "canter" (the "collected gallop") for the "natural gallop." But linguistic differences will not detract from the common-sense approach and explanations of the rider’s responsibilites. The basic exercises progress into lateral movements, two-tracking and other advanced work, with the flexibility of the theory making it both practical and correct. Mr. Phillips also is careful to emphasize that the basic nature of the horse must be considered in his training. In all, this is a complete picture guide that will help make your horse-whether it be a competitive dressage, a western reining, a show jumper, or a pleasure horse-the ideal horse for you. |

Ideal Worlds $52.98 In an age of increasing mobility and dissolving social bonds, the yearning for intimacy and security grows steadily stronger in western society. Plagued by uncertainty in the face of turbulent social and political systems and a sense of vulnerability generated by endless reports of war and horrific images of terror, many people are turning away from reality in search of safe havens and newly hopeful perspectives. Ideal Worlds explores the parallel reflection of this social trend in contemporary visual art. A new spirit of Romanticism is being revived in earnest by a number of young artists, from painters to new media practitioners, each of them in search of beauty, paradise lost, and the fictional world of fairytales. In some works, an emphasis on the individual and individual feelings goes hand in hand with a re-awakening interest in the landscape and its symbolic qualities. New Romanticism in Contemporary Art presents the work of some 15 artists, among them Justine Kurland, Catherine Opie, Laura Owens, and Christian Ward. |

Spleen and Ideal $14.98 With this amazing album, Dead Can Dance fully took the plunge into the heady mix of musical traditions that would come to define its sound and style for the remainder of its career. The straightforward goth affectations are exchanged for a sonic palette and range of imagination. Calling it “haunting” and “atmospheric” barely scratches even the initial surface of the album’s power. The common identification of the duo with a consciously medieval European sound starts here — quite understandable, when one considers the mystic titles of songs, references to Latin, choirs, and other touches that make the album sound like it was recorded in an immense cathedral. Opening number “De Profundis” sets this mood so thoroughly, with bells and drones and more supporting another bravura performance from Gerrard, while the immediately following “Ascension” builds on this initial effort with further style and grace. It’s limiting to think of either album or band strictly in terms of simple revivalism of old music. While the elements being drawn on are certainly of an older range, the results owe as much to the technologies of arrangement and production and a consciously cinematic feeling as much as they do antique pasts. Similarly, the feeling is not simply European but worldwide, with Gerrard’s glossolalia intentionally reaching beyond easy understanding. Perry’s vocal efforts are no less compelling, his own high point occurring with the vast-sounding “Enigma of the Absolute,” as a steady, massive drum pound echoes behind a similarly treated guitar/harpsichord combination, tinged with a striking string arrangement. The overall feeling is of an ancient religious service suddenly brought to life in a truly modern way, with stunning results. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music GuidePerformers: Tony Ayres – Tympani [Timpani]; Andrew Hutton – Soprano, Soprano (Vocal), Vocals; James Pinker – Tympani [Timpani]; Gus Ferguson – Cello; Lisa Gerrard – Multi Instruments, Various, Vocals, Voices; Martin McCarrick – Cello; Martin McGarrick – Cello; Brendan Perry – Multi Instruments, Various, Vocals, Voices; |

The Male Ideal $22.48 Long before Bruce Weber or Herb Ritts picked up a camera, there was a photographer whose images glorified the male nude. But Alonzo Hanagan, better known as Lon of New York, was working during the 1940s and 1950s, when images of the male nude were not just illicit but illegal. Twice, his studio was raided and his negatives destroyed by police. Many of the images in this book thus exist only as prints purchased by collectors at the time. Now, for the first time in more than forty years, these photos are published in one comprehensive collection that recovers this lost body of work. Suffused with a coy playfulness and a naïve vulnerability, these erotic images of men evoke a time of greater innocence but also of greater suppression, revealing much about gay history and the history of photography. |

The American Ideal $120.48 This work argues that American literary scholarship enshrines a reactionary vision of history, of narrative, and of America itself. Carafiol examines the way idealist assumptions have been essential to doing American literary history and unwraps the implications of that symbiosis for current debates about the aims and methods of literary history in general. Carafiol directs his critique not only at traditional approaches to American literature but also at the most influential recent efforts by New Historicists and cultural critics to revise that tradition. Reconsidering the debate between ahistorical and historical models of literary study, he argues that works by such writers like Emerson and Thoreau subvert the claims of critics on both sides. Such writing is important, he proposes, not as timeless art or as social document, but as a voice that can speak powerfully in contemporary conversations, challenging literary critics in all fields to reconsider their critical assumptions and professional practices. |

A Yelp in the Ideal $6.48 In the poetry of Celestine Frost, the "I" is not confessional, rarely even personal, but a voice, subliminal and quirky, like "he" or "she." In this, her fourth collection, liquid, unamalgamated thoughts of the subconscious seep into the conscious mind as ore into stone. The resulting idiom is the real subject of her work. |
