what is the difference between a steel shaft and a gray?

I'm looking to pick up a hybrid club, but I'm not sure what the differences are.

A graphite shaft is lighter and smoother. I suggest a hybrid with a graphite shaft. My hybrid has a steel shaft, and it is very difficult to swing because it's so heavy.
