Blues Professor $16.98 Half of these songs were recorded in 1975, all but one of the ten showing up on an Arhoolie LP (”Wailing and Sailing” is previously unreleased). The remaining ten, probably recorded by Burris himself on a cassette recorder in 1976, were all previously unissued. On all of the material, there’s nothing but Burris’ unaccompanied, singing harmonica playing, to which he adds some rhythm bones and hand clapping. Unsurprisingly, he sounds a good deal like his uncle Sonny Terry, playing wistful but warm country blues, whether originals or covers like “Hand Jive” (the Johnny Otis hit) and “Don’t Let Go” (a hit for Roy Hamilton in the late 1950s). Burris has deep rich vocals, and these are nice solo harmonica pieces, but nothing astounding. The recording quality isn’t top of the line, though it’s clear enough to get the job done. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: J.C. Burris – Handclapping, Harmonica, Vocals |

Reprogramming the Overweight Mind $20.48 Please visit KellyBurris.com for clinical studies, THE Burris Life Coach Certification and more. If you do not know how your subconscious works it is running itself and your life. The question you need to ask yourself is…Am I happy with my subconscious running itself or do I need to take control of it? If you need to take control then this book and the clinically proven process contained inside is the answer. THE Burris Life Coach is the Only Clinically Proven Process for Depression – Motivation – Weight Control – Eating Disorders – Relationships and Full Spectrum Behavior Change. Why do All Physicians, Psychologists and Psychiatrists Endorse THE Burris Life Coach From its introduction into psychiatric care in 1990, THE Burris Life Coach has been designed to measure the positive results it produces. How can you possibly know if you have helped someone make a positive change in their life and behavior if you do not document where they started, where they are going and where they have ended up? The mind is dulled, befuddled, and numbed by a host of medications while the root of the problem remains in active force. Your program frees the soul to say, I can change my mind about myself. I can be in control. It goes beyond the power of positive thinking because it gives the steps, not just the pep talk. This is the missing ingredient that is required for long term success! – Janna Thornton, Director of Program Support, Medifast Over the past 27 years of my medical practice, I’ve always felt that there was something missing from the weight loss equation. I’ve slowly come to realize that all diets are externally imposed. To be truly effective, long term, the weight loss has to originate internally. Success has to come from "within, not from without. Maybe that’s why so many people regain their weight–very few have been practicing the techniques to effectively control their actions! The Burris Program is the first treatment that directly attacks this problem! – R.J. Koval, M.D., B.S.P, Administrator of Clinical Studies As a physician, I found Mr. Burris’s program to be well thought out and presented in such a manner that most patients with obesity problems would understand and follow. We know that a diet alone is not sufficient in bringing about permanent weight loss; there must be a component to deal with the underlying factors that contribute to obesity. This program was of great benefit to me personally. I learned how to ask myself the questions that propelled me into new patterns of thinking and self-talk. As a result I have been able to shed over 30 pounds and have maintained a regular program of aerobic exercise that I find fun and enjoyable. – Linda Crawford, D.O. I have tried many weight-loss programs and over two years of professional counseling and have literally spent 1000 s of dollars to no avail. In one short week Mr. Burris gave me control over my life. Notice I said life, not just my eating. His program showed me ho… |

Blue vs. Black $3.98 Many of us believe that cases of police brutality are isolated events, happening only in large cities and having no bearing on our own lives. But incidents of cop violence against minority citizens have become far too common everywhere in America, and the problem affects us all. John L. Burris, a nationally renowned civil rights attorney, has spent the past twenty years defending the rights of minorities who have been the victims of police misconduct and excessive use of force. In Blue vs. Black he tells the true, heartbreaking stories of many of them–a young community center director who is savagely beaten by cops before the eyes of the children in his care; a woman who is handcuffed to a chainlink fence by a female officer and humiliated in front of her neighbors, simply because of a minor traffic violation; a father who is pulled over by police officers and shocked with a stun gun while his three-year-old daughter screams in the backseat of the car. These are no criminals, but ordinary, law-abiding citizens. Burris introduces us to several remarkable men and women who, by letting their stories be told in this book, demonstrate their courage in trying to repair the damaged relationships between blacks and law-enforcement officials. Burris presents with compassion and insight a measured analysis of tensions between police and the people they are meant to protect. In this important and moving work, he offers solutions for ending the cycle of police and civilian distrust. |

The Folkways Years, 1944-1963 $16.98 While he’s best known as guitarist Brownie McGhee’s longtime partner, harmonica ace and vocalist Sonny Terry made many excellent recordings as a solo act, and also recorded with Blind Boy Fuller and others. The 17 songs on this anthology include Terry playing with McGhee’s brother Sticks, Pete Seeger, and others, as well as several featuring Terry’s biting harmonica and wry leads relating stories of failure, triumph, and resiliency, backed by McGhee’s flickering but always audible guitar. The title is a bit misleading, since the earliest date for any session is 1946 (one number), and most are done between 1955 and 1959. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music GuidePerformers: Coyall McMahan – Maracas, Marimba; J.C. Magic $42.99 Like Roy Ayers, Patrice Rushen, George Benson, and George Duke, Tom Browne is a perfect example of a jazz musician who switched to R&B and was lambasted by jazz snobs for it. As jazz’s hardcore saw it, the trumpeter was a sellout — a gifted Clifford Brown disciple who was shamelessly wasting his chops playing commercial music. But commercial music isn’t necessarily inferior to jazz, and the fact is that much of Browne’s soul/funk output was excellent. While jazz snobs dismissed Browne’s third album, Magic, because it contains very little jazz, the Dave Grusin/Larry Rosen-produced LP has a lot going for it from a soul/funk standpoint. The only cuts on Magic that have anything to do with jazz are the sensuous quiet storm instrumental “Night Wind” and a lush Grusin arrangement of Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child.” This is an R&B album first and foremost, and those who admired Browne for his 1980 hit “Funkin’ for Jamaica” also admired such Magic cuts as the funky “Let’s Dance,” the Earth, Wind & Fire-ish “I Know,” and the addictive funk hit “Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move),” all of which feature vocalist Toni Smith — a passionate, Chaka Khan-influenced belter who had been featured on “Funkin’ for Jamaica.” While jazz snobs would be better off passing on Magic, R&B fans will find a lot to admire about Browne’s third album. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Dennis Bell – Arp Strings, Fender Rhodes; Jonathan Abramowitz – Strings; Lamar Alsop – Strings; Clifford Branch, Jr. – Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, Handclapping, Piano, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Al Brown – Strings; Tom Browne – Flugelhorn, Handclapping, Horn, Trumpet, Vocals; Sekou Bunch – Bass (Electric), Handclapping, Vocals (Background); Terry Burris – Handclapping, Piano; Lewis Eley – Strings; Max Ellen – Strings; Barry Finclair – St |

Same Train, Different Time [Bear Family] $19.66 Same Train, Different Time is Merle Haggard’s affectionate tribute to Jimmie Rodgers. Haggard provides narration between the songs, offering tales of Rodgers’ life and music. While the album is rooted in the past, the key to its success is how Haggard updates these traditional songs without losing sight of their roots. There are contemporary folk, country and blues influences scattered throughout the record, adding depth to the music and proving that Rodgers’ music is indeed timeless. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: James Burton – Dobro, Guitar, Guitar (Electric); Leon Chase Copeland – Fiddle, Guitar, Guitar (Electric), Harmonica; Bonnie Owens – Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; William Armstrong – Guitar; Roy Edward Burris – Drums; Glen Campbell – Guitar, Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; George French – Piano; George French, Jr. – Piano; Jim Gordon – Drums; Merle Haggard – Guitar, Vocals; Norm Hamlet – Guitar (Steel); Glen D. That’ll Flat Git It!, Vol. 1 $19.66 That’ll Flat Git It!, Vol. 1 contains 31 tracks of ’50s rockabilly culled from the vaults of RCA Victor. Originally created with hopes of rivaling the success of Elvis Presley, RCA began releasing rockabilly-flavored material. Half of these tracks just don’t cut it, like Lee Denson’s “New Shoes” (a painfully obvious ripoff of “Blue Suede Shoes”) and Jimmie Rodgers Snow’s “Milk Cow Blues,” entertaining but a bit too heavy on the country side of the fence. The other half of this disc is filled with gritty guitar twang and hiccup vocals that are absolutely wild, including Joe Clay’s “Sixteen Chicks,” Joey Castle’s “That Ain’t Nothing But Right,” and Ric Cartey’s ultra-primitive “Heart Throb” and “Oooh-Wee.” ~ Al Campbell, All Music GuidePerformers: Robert Bollinger – Choir, Chorus; Neal Burris – Guitar (Rhythm); Harry Clarke – Choir, Chorus; Link Davis – Guitar (Rhythm); Dorothy Ann Dillard – Choir, Chorus; Karl Garvin – Choir, Chorus; Walter Haynes – Fiddle; Fiddlin’ Red Herron – Fiddle; Hugh Jarrett – Choir, Chorus; Anita Kerr – Choir, Chorus; Pee Wee King – Accordion; Charlie Linville – Fiddle; Marvin Monoban – Fiddle; Louis Dean Nunley – Choir, Chorus; William Guilford Wright, Jr. – Choir, Chorus; Carl Adams |

Untamed Hawk: The Early Recordings of Merle Haggard $99.98 The thing that makes Bear Family’s Untamed Hawk a little difficult to listen to for pleasure is the very reason it’s necessary for serious Merle Haggard fans and collectors: Over the course of five discs, it contains all of the Capitol recordings (plus his early work for Talley) between 1962 and 1968, including alternate takes and unreleased cuts. This is a bonanza, since from the outset, Haggard was one of the most reliable of all country singers, turning out consistently enjoyable work due to his terrific ear for material and excellent songwriting and performances. He certainly did record a few duds, or at least unrealized tracks, during this time, but those are fascinating in context (either on the original albums or in this box set). Yet the consistency is rather remarkable; the singles are usually the standouts, but there are many tracks nearly as compelling as well. This is all apparent on the original albums as well as Untamed Hawk, but the box set may not be the best way to hear this music, largely because of the sequencing. Like many Bear Family boxes (or at least their sets from the ’80s through the mid-’90s), this places chronological order before listenability, as it presents everything in session order — which means that the alternate takes and false starts slow the momentum of the sessions. This is a problem, but it is one that can be avoided through judicious use of CD programming (or at least the fast-forward button), but it does also point out that this set is more for the historian than the casual listener. That said, those listeners who want a complete set of Merle Haggard’s groundbreaking ’60s recordings will certainly not be disappointed with this, particularly because many of these songs are not easily available on CD, even with the straight-up reissues of his ’60s albums. And, frankly, if you love Merle Haggard, it is worth investing in this set. His music may have grown richer in the years after this set, but even at the outset, he was one of the most inventive, interesting, enjoyable, and flat-out wonderful country artists of his time, and it’s all worth hearing, from the singles to the album tracks to the cuts that never were aired before this set. Even if not everything here is perfect, the overall effect is pretty awe-inspiring all the same. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: James Burton – Dobro, Guitar (Electric); Bobby Austin – Bass; Betty Jane Baker – Vocals; Phil Baugh – Guitar; |

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid [WS] $11.36 Some greedy scientists discover the “blood orchid” holds the secret to immortality, blooms once every seven years, and only grows deep in the jungles of giant python-infested Borneo. Quickly, an expedition is formed but it’s the rainy season and the only boat they can charter is a leaky barge belonging to unshaven Captain Johnson (Johnny Mesner). The cute blonde in the expedition (KaDee Strickland) digs Johnson’s stoic demeanor, while her scientist boss (Matthew Marsden) tries to win her through promises of untold riches once they find that orchid. Some of the other potential items on the snakes’ menu: Johnson’s burly co-pilot (Karl Yune), a handsome ship’s doctor (Nicholas Gonzalez), a shrieking techie nerd (Cole Burris), Johnson’s pet monkey, and two corporate money-grabbers (Morris Chestnut and Salli Richardson). Of course the only ones who are going to be doing any real grabbing here are the gigantic anacondas, who recognize a boat full of lunch when they see one. They attack from nowhere and are big and fast. As if they weren’t enough trouble, there are also poison spiders, a giant crocodile, dangerous waterfalls, explosions, treachery, headhunters, and slimy leeches. Fans of the original may miss Jon Voight, but pretty much everything else–a great mixture of fun, suspense, and both intentional and unintentional laughs–is here, including the healthy tweaking of racial and sexual horror-film stereotypes. Monster movie connoisseurs will find this a meal they can swallow whole and digest for days. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Exhibiting Religion $59.98 World’s fairs contributed mightily to defining a relationship between religion and the wider world of human culture. Even at the base level of popular culture found on the midways of the earliest international expositions—where Victorian ladies gawked at displays of non-Western, “primitive” life—the concept of religion as an independent field of study began to take hold in public consciousness. The World’s Parliament of Religions at the Chicago exposition of 1893 did as much as any other single event to introduce the idea that religion could be viewed as simply one concern among many within the rapidly diversifying modern lifestyle. A chronicle of the emergence and development of religion as a field of intellectual inquiry, Exhibiting Religion: Colonialism and Spectacle at International Expositions, 1851-1893 is an extensive survey of world’s fairs from the inaugural Great Exhibition in London to the Chicago Columbian Exposition and World’s Parliament of Religions. As the first broad gatherings of people from across the world, these events were pivotal as forums in which the central elements of a field of religion came into contact with one another. John Burris argues that comparative religion was the focal point for early attempts at comparative culture and that both were defined more by the intercultural politics and material exchanges of colonialism than by the spirit of objective intellectual inquiry. Equally a work of American and British religious history and a cultural history of the emerging field of religion, this book offers definitive theoretical insights into the discipline of religious studies in its early formation. |

The Early Christian Book (Cua Studies in Early Christianity) $34.48 From the very beginning Christianity was a religion of books–a lived, but also a written faith. The essays in this collection focus on the ways in which books were produced, used, treasured, and conceptualized in the early Christian centuries (AD 100-600). During this crucial period, just after the New Testament writings were composed, Christianity grew from the religion of a tiny minority in the eastern Roman Empire to the religion of the empire itself, and beyond. To no small extent, this success was based on the power of its books.Written by experts in the field, the essays in this volume examine the early Christian book from a wide range of disciplines: religion, art history, history, Near Eastern studies, and classics. Topics include theories of the book, book production and use, books as sacred objects, and problems of gender, authorship, and authority. By examining Christian books from multiple perspectives, this book invites readers into the entire "bookish" world of early Christianity: a world of writing and reading practices, of copying and exchanging texts, of persuading and debating with books, and of representing holiness and power through codices of the law, the scriptures, and the lives of the saints. Essays cover a wide geographical range and discuss texts written all across the Mediterranean world–in Greek, Latin, Coptic, Syriac, and Hebrew. All ancient texts are translated into English, some for the first time.An introduction by Philip Rousseau provides a valuable overview, followed by essays written by Daniel Boyarin, Catherine Burris, Catherine M. Chin, Gillian Clark, Catherine Conybeare, Kim Haines-Eitzen, Caroline Humfress, Chrysi Kotsifou, John Lowden, Claudia Rapp, Daniel Sarefield, and Mark Vessey. |

Originally released as a 2 LP set on Capitol (SWBB-223). Includes original release liner notes by Hugh Cherry and new liner notes by Colin Escott.CD reissue of the 1969 double-LP with two bonus remakes of Jimmie Rodgers songs.Scholars and fans acknowledge two early recording acts as the progenitors of modern country music: the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. The Carters established country`s roots in old-time folk songs, sentimental ballads and rough, heartfelt harmony singing. Rodgers, the more influential of the two, merged African-American country blues with Anglo-Saxon melodicism and original, personal songwriting. Prior to the `60s, few artists lacked the influence of one or both of these acts. Rodgers was the avowed hero of Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, George Jones, and Lefty Frizzell, to name just a few of his famous devotees. Frizzell, in fact, recorded the album of Rodgers songs that inspired Merle Haggard to record SAME TRAIN, DIFFERENT TIME.Haggard has a natural affinity for Rodgers` songs of train-hopping, cop-dodging and heartbreak. He also sings bluesy runs with ease and conviction, and he can yodel, an ability often called for in Rodgers` songs. As a result, SAME TRAIN fits neatly into Haggard`s body of largely original work, making the album a great introduction to the work of two of country music`s masters. The Strangers–Haggard`s great backing band featuring James Burton on dobro and guitar–add stellar support throughout. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
