MP-44 Assault Rifle?

MP-44 how many were produced and who made them? what theater was in the last days of WW2. And yes, the MP-44 is that AK-47 was based, and the Germans were the first pioneers of the Assualt rifle. 7.62 for 39 is very nearly identical to the German cartridge.

The MP44, later, the "Sturmgewehr 44", was developed by Rheinmetall AG (IIRC), because analysis operations and requests of the (Eastern) Front. Analysis of after action reports reveals that most of the commitments infantry were taking place in 200 meters or less, too far for a machine gun and really too close to a complete round of power 8mm Mauser. This fit perfectly with the demands of the front of something like the FG42 Gewehr Fallschirmjaeger but without crushing setback. The prototypes are shown to Hitler, who thought it a waste of resources when Mauserwerke and subcontractors Kar98Ks were leaving the old. (The round was simply a 7.92mm Kurz "8mm Mauser bullet sheath attached to a dive.
