Native American Mounted Rifleman 1861-65 $3.84 Mark Lardas is an amateur historian and a long-time ship modeller, and he currently works in League City, Texas. He has written extensively about modelling as well as naval, maritime, and military history. He has spent many years researching the Native American involvement in the American Civil War.Several thousand Native Americans fought on both sides during the American Civil War. The Kentucky Rifleman (Dodo Press) $10.09 Col. Daniel Boone/Boon (1734-1820) was an American pioneer and hunter whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now the U. S. state of Kentucky, which was then beyond the western borders of the Thirteen Colonies. Despite resistance from American Indians, for whom Kentucky was a traditional hunting ground, in 1778 Boone blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. There he founded Boonesborough, one of the first English-speaking settlements beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Boone was a Militia officer during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). He was elected to the first of his three terms in the Virginia General Assembly during the war, and fought in the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782. Boone worked as a surveyor and merchant after the war, but he went deep into debt as a Kentucky land speculator. Frustrated with legal problems resulting from his land claims, in 1799 Boone resettled in Missouri, where he spent his final years. |

US Marine Rifleman 1939-45: Pacific Theater $3.78 These is sometimes a basic assumption that a World War II United States Marine Corps rifleman was essentially trained, uniformed, equipped, and armed much the same as a US Army rifleman. While there were of course similarities, the Marines conducted their own unique training programs, wore mostly different uniforms and equipment, and possessed some unique weapons, although they also used many of the same weapons as the Army.brThe Marine Corps was not part of the Navy, but a component of the Navy Department alongside the Navy. While the Marines specialized in amphibious warfare, the Army actually conducted more amphibious assaults in the Pacific than the Marines. The typical Marine was extremely proud of his service and acutely aware that there were only six Marine divisions but 89 Army divisions. The Marine Corps began World War II with less than 66,000 officers and men; more than that would be wounded before it ended. The Corps grew to almost 487,000. It provided only 5 percent of the US armed forces, but suffered 10 percent of overall American casualties.brThe Marines were able to build on their proud traditions and history to transform a small branch of service into a premier combined arms amphibious assault force. Regardless of its expansion by 750 percent, the Corps was able to maintain its sense of tradition, instill that into thousands of new Marines, and create an elite arm of service. Here, Gordon L Rottman, follows the Marine rifleman through his draft and training, and then participation in operations such as Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands, Saipan and Tinian in the Mariana Islands, and Iwo Jima.brThe opening sentences of the Marine Creed, composed shortly after the attack on Pearl HarborbrThis is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. |

Rifleman : 671196033822 $12.47 Due to its aging sheriff, the town of North Fork, New Mexico, had become a haven for thugs and villians of the Old West. Fortunately for the inocent townsfolk, there was Lucas McCain, a solemn, understanding widower raising his young son on a ranch near the town. The tall, lean, latern-jawed rancher carried a modified rifle that could fire a round in less than half a second. McCain, a ray of virtue and honor in a violent world, strode confidently down the dusty streets of North Fork with his rifle. Rifleman Sahib $18.48 The campaigns of a ’soldier sahib’ in the nineteenth centuryThe author of this book was a true soldier of the Raj. His long career took place almost entirely in India or was concerned with the wars of the Honourable East India Company. As a young man he joined the Bombay Rifles in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign and arrived in the sub-continent in time to take part in the Southern Maratha Campaign. Next came the wars that brought about the final destruction of the Sikh kingdom and Maude was present at the storming of Multan and other key actions. 1856 brought ‘John Company’s Last War’-The Persian Campaign. Maude took part and left posterity much interesting detail on this little covered episode of British military history. The following year he was engaged in the Bheel Campaign and shortly thereafter the infamous Indian Mutiny which erupted in the North East. Again the author was called to the colours to take an active part as a staff officer. This is an ideal book for those interested in India’s campaigns in the Victorian age. |

Rifleman MacGill’s War $29.48 A poet’s war in the mud of the First World War in Europe. After the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, Irishman Patrick MacGill enlisted in a territorial army unit the 2nd London Irish Battalion as a rifleman. His claim at the time was that he and its colonel were the only true Irishmen serving in it. MacGill, already a well regarded author and poet, would record his experiences from training to his unit’s embarkation to France and then onwards to his early experiences of trench warfare and finally to the time of the great attacks which included the battle of Loos and in which he was seriously wounded. During the course of the war-which he survived-MacGill wrote several books on the subject, but three-The Amateur Army, The Red Horizon and The Great Push, directly concern his time with the London Irish and it is these books that have here been combined-in their entirety-by the Leonaur Editors to create this single comprehensive volume of his life as an ordinary rifleman in the front line. MacGill employs his talent to great effect in this volume so the reader is not only taken into the heart of the war through his sensitivity to the description of events, emotions, sights and details but also because of his ability to convey realistic dialogue that portrays the various types of the army in the trenches authentically and often with great affection and humour. |

Soviet Rifleman 1941-45 $8.97 In the first four months of the war the The Red Army did not refer to its ground combat troops as infantry but as rifle troops (streltsi), dating back to the Czarist era when rifle units were considered more elite than rank-and-file infantry (pyekhoty).brThe Soviet rifleman initially suffered defeats and retreat during the early desperate days of the Great Patriotic War, then rallied to conduct a stubborn defense in the brutal winter of 1941/42, and eventually turned the tables at the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk. This title provides a view of the Soviet rifleman in defeat and victory, on the defensive and in attack, and in the heat of the summer and the frozen brutality of the Russian Winter. Their political beliefs, motivation, training, everyday life, weaponry and equipment are examined, accompanied by rare photographs and full color artwork.Author G. Rottman does a very good job of portraying what it must have been like to be one of these men… It all makes for a book that is both interesting and informative. One I know you will enjoy reading. -Scott Van Aken, modelingmadness.com (November 2007) |

British Rifleman 1797-1815 (Warrior) $14.98 The rifle corps of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars are among the most recognisable of all the soldiers of that era: their distinctive dark green uniforms are as familiar as some of their exploits. They have achieved considerable fame through the large numbers of memoirs written by members of the rifle corps as well as through modern fiction, most notably the Sharpe series. Apart from their reputation as a corps d’elite, the riflemen were, in their time, at the very cutting edge of military technology and tactical theory. Philip Haythornwaite here uses fascinating first hand accounts and detailed research to give a ’soldier’s-eye view’ of the British Rifleman, his life and work. |

US Marine Rifleman in Vietnam 1965-73 $18.11 This volume provides an in-depth look at the experience of the ordinary US marine ‘grunt’ in Vietnam. Organisation of the corps, weaponry, equipment, uniforms, training and medical arrangements are all discussed. However, where this book differs from other similar works is not only in the detail that it goes into but also in the unifying theme of examining all these differing aspects of marine life from the point of view of a soldier serving in the conflict. The author, Charles Melson, actually served in Vietnam, and it is this personal experience that allows him to provide such a unique angle on the subject. This detailed, grass-roots look at the backbone of the US Marine Corps, the US Marine Rifleman, provides for an enjoyable, informative read in a good chronological order that is easy to follow. Osprey’s U.S Marine Rifleman 1939-45 – Pacific Theater is a valuable addition to any figure reference library. -Steve Readdie, Historicus Forma (October 2006) |

Normandy 1944: A Young Rifleman’s War $26.19 This is the Battle of Normandy, neither glamorized nor sanitized, as seen from ground level during the bloody summer of 1944athe personal experiences of an 18-year-old 4th Infantry Division rifleman who joined his company shortly after D-Day. He quickly came to admire and respect the men of G Company, then was close by as one by one many of them died during the horrific fighting in the fields and streets of a normally beautiful and tranquil land. Here are the realities of that war: opening the casualty blanket rolls, seeing the dead being buried in mattress covers, the sounds, the smells and the fears of men in infantry combat. A glimpse, too, of the boys who fought the battles of World War II as they grew up or matured during the Great Depression, the rigors of infantry basic training, life in England in the weeks leading up to D-Day. |

Adventures of a Young Rifleman $28.48 An ordinary young soldier’s view of both sides of a great conflictThis a companion book the Leonaur title ‘A conscript for Empire’. Like young Philippe Schwein the author of that book, Johan Christian Maempel was a Rhinelander who found himself in the service of Napoleon’s French Empire. Maempel joined the Light Infantry and began a tough life of campaigning that took him to Spain where he fought and suffered at Cuidad Rodrigo, before the lines at Torres Vedras and ultimately as one of those besieged behind the walls of Almeida before it finally succumbed to attacking British forces. Good fortune spared his life and where many of his comrades fell he was taken prisoner. As a German he was offered freedom upon joining the King’s German Legion and carrying its rifle. He accepted and found himself once more despatched to the Iberian Peninsula to oppose Suchet and his former comrades in the campaign for the eastern flank. This is a highly entertaining and readable account of army life on both sides of the same conflict and will be certain to please all those interested in the Napoleonic Wars. |

The dexterous cowboy took on the criminal detritus of the Old West with his trusty rifle (hence the name of the show), picking off villains with a gun designed for speed and precision. But McCain had another, overriding concern, namely the upbringing of his young son, which he carries out under adverse circumstances. This release offers a taster of the show, with three episodes included.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseFull Frame – 1.33 |

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. The Gage D’amour. Foil a long time the whole country rang with the exploit of the brave O’Flaherty: he was deified by the mob, courted by the middle- classes, and even visited by the gentry, and feasted at their houses; being himself of gentle blood, though a wild scion of an ancient race. It was actually proposed to get up a subscription to purchase him au ensigncy; but he disdained the idea of acquiring the silver epaulette through the medium of filthy lucre, exclaiming that he’d win it on the breach, or not at all. For my part, I became wild to follow to the field, so renowned a leader; and day and night worried my poor brains to accomplish this first and only wish of my heart. Fortune at length, whether for good or evil, seemed disposed to favour my juvenile aspirations; and an opportunity was afforded me, when I least expected it, of escaping from the loathed drudgery of civil life. My brother, who was in business, and evidently on the high road to fortune, having occasion to go to London, offered to take me with him, and procure me a commission; while I was so delighted with the idea, that I never gave my father a moment’s feace till he consented to let me go?with the proviso, however, that should limit my ambition to the militia; and thus, as the phrase is, he abandoned the last prop of his declining age, to gratify my boyish propensity. Behold me, then, scarcely in my fifteenth year, about to launch on the great unknown world, in a profession the difficulties of which I had no possible means of ascertaining, and whose splendour alone occupied my thoughts. Great, indeed, was the envy of my schoolfellows at the fame and fortune that awaited me, in that ever- glorious career which first enlists the sympathies of the youthful heart; and greater… |

By the time Foley finally managed to grab a few hours sleep three nights later, he’d already fought in a bloody attack that left sixty percent of his battalion dead or wounded. The Compleat Rifleman Harris – The adventures of a soldier of the 95th (Rifles) during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic wars $14.48 The most famous Rifleman account in its complete and original form – unedited and unabridged. Benjamin Harris’ story has rightly won its place amongst the best and most well known British Army accounts of life on campaign during the war in Spain against Napoleon’s French Army. It graphically tells of the gruelling retreat to Corunna, but it is the human detail of Harris’ recollections on the march and on the battlefield that have made this a classic Napoleonic period memoir. This is Harris’ full story – not readily available in this form for many years – in fact the Compleat Rifleman Harris! |

Rifleman Macgill’s War: A Soldier of the London Irish During the Great $16.24 A poet’s war in the mud of the First World War in Europe. |

Rifleman Sahib: The Recollections of an Officer of the Bombay Rifles D $24.24 The campaigns of a ’soldier sahib’ in the nineteenth centurybrThe author of this book was a true soldier of the Raj. |

Marine Rifleman: Forty-Three Years in the Corps $6.75 The memoir of a legendary combat veteran who rose from enlisted man to colonel and won the Medal of HonorIntrigued by the mystique and challenge of the Marine Corps, eighteen-year-old Wesley Fox enlisted in the summer of 1950, shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War. He saw action with the First Marine Division and was wounded in 1951. After Korea, Fox advanced steadily in the enlisted ranks, and received an appointment as second lieutenant early in the Vietnam War. He was twice wounded in a vicious battle during Operation Dewey Canyon. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Fox received the Medal of Honor. Readers interested in U.S. military history, the Marine Corps, and inspiring tales of personal achievement will enjoy reading about this extraordinary career. |

Marine Rifleman: Forty-Three Years in the Corps $9.47 Memoirs of military men are no rarity, but few cover a life in as much remarkable detail as this one. –MILITARY HISTORY OF THE WESTRecounts a Medal of Honor recipient’s legendary career in both enlisted and commissioned service that spanned more than four decades of U.S. military operationsIntrigued by the mystique and challenge of the Marine Corps, eighteen-year-old Wesley Fox enlisted in the summer of 1950, shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War. He saw action with the First Marine Division in Korea and was wounded in 1951. After Korea, Fox advanced steadily in the enlisted ranks, reaching the rank of first sergeant, and, early in the Vietnam War, he received an appointment as second lieutenant. While serving as a rifle company commander with the Third Marine Division in 1969, he was twice wounded in a vicious battle during Operation Dewey Canyon. Early in this battle, every member of the company’s command staff was either wounded or killed. In an all-or-nothing effort led by First Lieutenant Fox, his company repulsed the attack of a much larger enemy force and then counterattacked with devastating results. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Fox received the Medal of Honor, which President Richard Nixon presented to him at the White House. Despite the personal sacrifice and frequent danger, Fox resolutely embraced the ethos of the Marine Corps, risking his life on numerous occasions and emerging as a leader in one of the most respected and feared fighting organizations in the world. Readers interested in U.S. military history from the second half of the twentieth century, in the Marine Corps, and in inspiring tales of personal achievement will find plenty of each in Fox’s extraordinary memoir. |

On Point: A Rifleman’s Year in the Boonies: Vietnam 1967-1968 $2.16 Roger Hayes’s year in Vietnam was like that of a lot of other young men, riflemen in their teens and early twenties. And, it was a lot more. Hayes was a pointman, the person who led the way, the person upon whom the squad and platoon depended to keep them safe from ambushes, safe from booby traps, safe to survive today to fight tomorrow. It was arduous, exacting work. And it was dangerous. The man on point had to be the best. He had to be the best or he would quickly be replaced by a Viet Cong bullet. To survive was a challenge. To return home in one piece was a remarkable. Roger Hayes was just such a remarkable soldier. His story is inspiring and a tribute to all his comrades who fought and too often died in Vietnam |

Adventures of a Young Rifleman: The Experiences of a Saxon in the Fren $15.35 An ordinary young soldier’s view of both sides of a great conflictbrThis a companion book the Leonaur title ‘A conscript for Empire’. |

An American Soldier’s Memoir of Vietnam $29.95 Drafted in October 1968, John A. Nesser left behind his wife and young son to fight in the controversial Vietnam War. Like many in his generation, he was deeply at odds with himself over the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, instilled with a strong sense of duty to his country but uncertain about its mission and his role in it. Nesser was deployed to the Ashau Valley, site of some of the wars heaviest fighting, and served eight months as an infantry rifleman before transferring to become a door gunner for a Chinook helicopter. In this stirring memoir, he recalls in detail the exhausting missions in the mountainous jungle, the terror of walking into an ambush, the dull-edged anxiety that filled quiet days, and the steady fear of being shot out of the sky. The accounts are richly illustrated with Nessers own photographs of the military firebases and aircraft, the landscapes, and the people he encountered.Drafted in October 1968, John A.
