Monocular Vision $64.33 Monocular vision is vision in which each eye is used separately. By using the eyes in this way, as opposed by binocular vision, the field of view is increased, while depth perception is limited. The eyes are usually positioned on opposite sides of the animal’s head giving it the ability to see two objects at once. The word monocular comes from the Greek root, mono for one, and the Latin root, oculus for eye. Most birds and lizards (except chameleons) have monocular vision. Owls and other birds of prey are notable exceptions. Also many prey have monocular vision to see predators. |

The Vision Revolution[eBook] $17.39 pPrimates evolved binocular vision (both eyes facing forward) so that they can see in three dimensions, critical as they jumped from branch to branch. Higher primates developed color vision to better hunt out ripe fruit. Optical illusions succeed because they exploit the limitations of our visual processing. Wrong! All of these beliefs are false, as groundbreaking research by evolutionary scientist and neurobiologist Mark Changizi now reveals. Changizi’s research centers on the why of human vision. Why do we have binocular vision? Why do we see in color the way we do? Why do optical illusions work? And why are we able to absorb information by reading? A very new invention from an evolutionary perspective more readily than by hearing, which we’ve evolved to do over hundreds of thousands of years? iThe Vision Revolution/i answers these questions, and proves, with the detailed results of Changizi’s fieldwork, that the answers are very different than traditionally believed. |

Basic and Clinical Applications of Vision Science $180 Basic and Clinical Applications of Vision Sciences contains the edited papers presented at the Enoch Vision Science Symposium, April 27-30 1996, which was organized in honor of the pioneer in vision science, Dr Jay M Enoch. Dr Enoch served for twelve years as Dean, School of Optometry, University of California, Berkeley. The book is organized along the lines of Dr. Enoch’s contributions to vision science, but is not limited to these topics. Of special note, the reader will find papers on important new developments in photoreceptor, ophthalmic and visual optics, retinal imaging, ophthalmic physiology and pathophysiology, visual psychophysics and visual techniques. The papers are grouped into the following sections: photoreceptor optics; ophthalmic and visual optics; binocular vision, developmental vision, eye movements and physiology; ophthalmic dysfunction; visual psychophysics and clinical applications; history of vision science. Part I treats the eye as an image-forming organ and provides an overview of the projections from the retina to key visual structures of the brain. The second part builds on this material, examining the functions of the retina and its central projections in greater detail. Part III addresses certain advanced topics in vision. This book is intended for use in a course for undergraduates in biology, neuroscience, or psychology who have had an introductory course on the nervous system. It is also useful as an ancillary graduate-level text.Preface; Part I. The Eye and Visual Pathways: 1. Introduction; 2. Structure and development of the human eye; 3. Image formation; 4. Early Vision and Beyond $37.5 Using as its springboard Bela Julesz’s many seminal contributions in vision, iEarly Vision/ipresents in one convenient volume strategic problems in binocular vision, visual texture, motion perception, and visual attention. Each is examined from the point of view of at least three major disciplines – psychophysics, computational vision, and neurophysiology.br /br /As we gain deeper insights into the workings of the mind, and as technological advances allow bolder experiments, a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of vision is essential. These contributions present progress across disciplines in research on vision processes at the sensory level that are devoid of higher-order cognitive processes and semantics. Although divided into the four major sections mentioned above, chapters and sections are bound by common threads: several chapters report on psychoanatomical techniques, other chapters examine the role of color in diverse areas of early visual processing, while still others share the theme of perceptual learning, a relatively new area of research in early vision.br /br /BSections/Contributors/B:br /br /- BBinocular Vision and Stereopsis/B. Fourier Vision: Segmentation and Velocity Measurement Using the Fourie $171.16 Fourier Vision provides a new treatment of figure-ground segmentation in scenes comprising transparent, translucent, or opaque objects. Exploiting the relative motion between figure and ground, this technique deals explicitly with the separation of additive signals and makes no assumptions about the spatial or spectral content of the images, with segmentation being carried out phasor by phasor in the Fourier domain. It works with several camera configurations, such as camera motion and short-baseline binocular stereo, and performs best on images with small velocities/displacements, typically one to ten pixels per frame. The book also addresses the use of Fourier techniques to estimate stereo disparity and optical flow. Numerous examples are provided throughout. Fourier Vision will be of value to researchers in image processing & computer vision and, especially, to those who have to deal with superimposed transparent or translucent objects. Researchers in application areas such as medical imaging and acoustic signal processing will also find this of interest. |

The Vision Revolution: How the Latest Research Overturns Everything We $14.6 Primates evolved binocular vision (both eyes facing forward) so that they can see in three dimensions, critical as they jumped from branch to branch. Higher primates developed color vision to better hunt out ripe fruit. Optical illusions succeed because they exploit the limitations of our visual processing. Wrong! PAll of these beliefs are false, as groundbreaking research by evolutionary scientist and neurobiologist Mark Changizi now reveals. Changizi’s research centers on the why of human vision. Why do we have binocular vision? Why do we see in color the way we do? Why do optical illusions work? And why are we able to absorb information by readinga very new invention from an evolutionary perspectivemore readily than by hearing, which we’ve evolved to do over hundreds of thousands of years? PThe Vision Revolution answers these questions, and proves, with the detailed results of Changizi’s fieldwork, that the answers are very different than traditionally believed. A radically new perspective of human vision is now emerging. The Vision Revolution is upon us. |
