Howard Alden/George Van Eps – Hand-Crafted Swing $10.87 Personnel: Howard Alden (guitar), George Van Eps (guitar), Dave Stone (bass), Jake Henna (drums).This is the second of four CDs featuring George Van Eps (still at the top of his game at age 77), the pioneer of the seven-string electric guitar, with Howard Alden (just 32 at the time of these recordings), one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation, along with bassist Dave Stone and drummer Jake Hanna (who sticks to brushes when present). The interaction between the two players is similar to that of two old friends who have performed together countless times; lyricism and effortless swing are the key ingredients throughout the sessions. The focus is primarily upon standards of the 1930s and 1940s, including show tunes like "All the Things You Are," "I Could Write a Book," and "The Nearness of You," as well as jazz classics such as "What`s New," "Stompin` at the Savoy," and "Lil` Darlin`." Van Eps also wrote two of the songs, "Lap Piano" and "Forty-Eight," both of which are miniatures featuring the veteran unaccompanied. The influence of Van Eps upon Alden can`t be underestimated, as the younger guitarist was having a seven-string electric guitar built for him while these sessions were in progress, so by the time of their next meeting in the studio he could also take advantage of the musical possibilities of having the added bass string. In any case, it was an obvious thrill for Alden to play with the experienced Van Eps, who literally invented the seven-string guitar (also played by Bucky Pizzarelli) and would soon be added to Alden`s musical arsenal. The second of four CDs that they would make together prior to Van Eps` death in 1998, they play a mix of popular standards and show tunes from the 1930s, `40s and `50s. Highlights include a lyrical "What`s New." a deliberate "I Could Write a Book," and an intricate "All the Things You Are," along with less frequently played chestnuts like the swinging "It`s Wonderful." Van Eps is unaccompanied on both of his original compositions, "Lap Piano" and "Forty-Eight." By the Hand of the Father $16.98 The depth and feeling of By the Hand of the Father is a bit shocking. The project began as a play that premiered in Los Angeles in 2000 and has been stripped down to a handful of songs accompanied by voice-over texts. These songs and voice-overs weave a complex tapestry that explores the Mexican-American experience in the 20th century. Individuals leave their homeland, search for the American Dream, and attempt to hold on to their heritage. Alejandro Escovedo, who has written most of the lyrics and sings most of the vocals, stands at the center of this multi-faceted venture. “Rosalie” tells the tale of two lovers separated by “An ocean of powder and dust,” who finally marry after a seven-year courtship punctuated by only seven visits. At the beginning of “Mexico Americano,” the narrator recalls how his father always felt more Mexican than American until he joined the U.S. Army to defend a country “that was barely even his.” These songs move forward in time, from the early 1900s to World War II to the Vietnam War. Heavy drums and a galloping guitar punctuate “Hard Road,” a series of vignettes about the working lives of Mexican-Americans. Like other Americans, they hope their sons and daughters will be able to do better than them. By the Hand of the Father is a contemplative work of rare depth. By attempting to find meaning in the lives and stories of those who have come before them, Escovedo and friends have crafted a penetrating work of art that’s also a joy to listen to. ~ Ronnie D.
