Geezer Senior
Everyone knows that cigarettes can be a great social leveler.
By this I mean that in a company if the smokers nip outside for a joint Cigarette, a director may with a subordinate in a much more familiar way, as they speak each other in any business situation.
I am aware , to make me guilty of this one with top management. I remember some time ago I was in my consulting firm is large gatherings. It was one of those days two events where we are the Aqua-Drive buggy around a few fields, shoot bows and arrows in order to act in the forest and usually such as 6-year-olds for a day. All in the name of the leadership and Team-building. You know the kind of things.
Was the problem, the Executive Board and senior management are not really into outdoor activities as much as any other . insert I do not think it was because they did not see the point (we could not and did it anyway). I think she really did not want to go and make fools of themselves above all others. I also saw that many of my colleagues were interested to know the directors, could not see, however, a way into their inner circle.
Where am I going with this?
Well, I took the quick way to establishing rapport quickly by a cigar with some of the directors as soon as the dinner ready. Than I was a massive breath of the cigar, I smiled kindly on my new best friends, ignoring the burning in the mouth and affirmations deep into my lungs. I thought I was terrible wise, the administration at the same table with the directors and smoked that with a good laugh with them.
What is it? Smoking is the way to greatness? Are you immediately Access to the Board of Directors, and allows you to forge an instant meteoric rise to the Board?
Not quite. Of course I was completely fooled me. Although I was convinced that I stumbled into the attention of key people in the company, I should have the time to learn, at the other end of the long dining table and what they have taken were doing.
The guys I have been smoking cigars with the "old guard" of the company. All over 55 years old, probably just before the Retirement, and enjoy that this young buck (me) a few old stories about the war, hostile takeover bids.

The only problem is that the kind of people you will get associated with are probably not the guys you need to associate with, as they are probably on their way down or on their way out.
